Salon 300: Minnesota State Fair Overflow Show
The Fine Arts department of the Minnesota State Fair presents an annual art exhibition that is the result of a juried competition. Participation is open to all living residents of Minnesota. Online registration is required. See www.mnstatefair.org for information on how to register and compete for the State Fair show.
Salon 300, held at the Hopkins Center for the Arts, is open to artists who submitted work to the State Fair, and whose work was chosen for the Phase 2 review but not chosen to be in the Fair's exhibition.
Please read the following information carefully.
Eligibility
- You submitted an art work to the 2012 Minnesota State Fair art competition, your work was chosen for the Phase 2 review, but your work was not selected for exhibition at the Fairgrounds.
- You are among the first 450 artists to pick up an entry form (take only what you need, please). Forms must be obtained at the State Fair during the pick up times for unselected work. Only original forms will be accepted—no copies.
Process
- Pick up an entry form when you pick up your unselected work at the State Fair grounds. Entry forms are available only at the Fairgrounds during scheduled pick-up times. If you do not see the forms, ask one of the volunteers to help you locate them. We will not accept any work without this form (the State Fair tag on the back of the pieces is not enough).
- Complete the entry form.
- Deliver your art with entry form to Hopkins Center for the Arts during the period of August 4 - 6. Hours [no exception to the times and days]:
- 10 am - 8 pm, Saturday, August 4
- noon - 5 pm, Sunday, August 5
- 10 am - noon, Monday, August 6
- Make sure your artwork is ready to install. For wall-mounted pieces, this means you must reattach the hanging hardware. A horizontal wire is highly recommended as it allows us to attach a security device to your piece. Leave the State Fair tag on the back of the piece or add a label with your name and contact information.
- Be our guest at the opening reception on Saturday, August 11 from 6 - 8 pm and meet fellow artists.
- Participating artists must pick up their work at the close of the Salon 300 exhibition during the period of September 4 - 5, noon - 8 pm. [note: Center is closed Monday, September 3 for Labor Day.] A storage fee of $5 per day will be charged for work not picked up during the scheduled dates and times. No responsibility for loss of or damage to artwork not picked up on time is assumed by HCA.
Criteria for Artwork
- Work must remain in the show until it closes.
- The maximum dimensions for wall-mounted work is 4’x4’. Wall-mounted work may not weigh over 20 pounds.
- For three-dimensional stand-alone pieces, maximum weight is 60 lbs. One person must be able to lift and move the work easily and the piece must pose no danger to patrons (ex. exposed glass shards, pointed elements projecting into gallery walk space, etc.).
- Work must not have been exhibited previously at the Hopkins Center for the Arts, including but not limited to prior Salon 300 exhibitions.
- HCA reserves the right not to accept work that either poses a potential hazard to patrons or that is deemed fragile or unstable in nature. HCA reserves the right to restrict placement of some art within the facility.
- Some exhibition areas receive direct sunlight; if this is a concern, work should not be submitted for exhibition.
- All work must be delivered ready for presentation in a professional manner. For wall-mounted artwork, this means the work must be framed unless clearly meant to be displayed without a frame and must include hanging hardware. Defective pieces (ex. damaged frame, work loose in frame, dirty mat, cracked glass, obvious repairs; no secure way to hang the piece) will not be accepted.
All reasonable care will be taken in handling artwork but no responsibility is assumed by the Hopkins Center for the Arts for loss or damage of any kind, however caused. Placement of art within the exhibition is determined solely by Hopkins Center for the Arts.
Sales Policy
We encourage participating artists to put their work for sale. The Hopkins Center for the Arts takes a 25% commission on all artwork sold so price accordingly. Any work sold during Salon 300 remains in the show until the show closes. The Center will see that the purchaser receives the artwork. The artist receives a check for the sale less commission directly from the City of Hopkins within 30 days of the close of the show.
